The Tithe Applotment Books
At the time of the Reformation the Protestant Church of Ireland was established. Every farmer - owner or tenant - was obliged to pay tithes to the Church of Ireland. In the case of the Catholics payment of tithes to an alien Church was very much resented. What became known as the Tithe War (1831-1836) - a campaign of passive resistance to the payment of tithes - lead to partial relief in 1838 and to final abolition in 1869.
Tithes were payable on agricultural land only. The Tithe Applotment Books record the county, parish, townland, tenant' name, acreage and amount of tithes due.
